Granola is one of those versatile snacks that can be enjoyed in so many ways – from topping your morning yogurt to munching on it as an afternoon snack. Making homemade granola is not only easy but also a great way to control the ingredients and customize it to your taste. Plus, it’s a healthy alternative to store-bought versions, which can often be loaded with added sugars and preservatives. This homemade granola recipe is made with wholesome ingredients like chopped nuts, seeds, oats, honey, coconut oil, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. It’s packed with nutrients, naturally sweetened, and so delicious!
Let’s dive into this simple yet flavorful recipe for homemade granola that will have your kitchen smelling amazing in no time.
Ingredients:
1 cups rolled oats
2 - 3 cups of chopped nutes
1/4 cup seeds (pumpkin, sunflower, or linseed seeds work great!)
3 tablespoons (or maple syrup for a vegan option)
2 tablespoons cup coconut oil (melted)
1 tsp ground cinnamon
A pinch of salt
Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, combine the oats, chopped nuts, and seeds. If you’re using a mix of nuts, feel free to get creative – the more variety, the better! A combination of almonds, walnuts, and pecans gives the granola a satisfying crunch, while seeds like sunflower or pumpkin add extra nutrients and flavor.
Add the Wet Ingredients
In a separate small bowl, mix the melted coconut oil, honey (or maple syrup), cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Stir until everything is well combined and the liquid mixture is smooth. The coconut oil not only adds a delicious richness but also helps bind the granola together.
Combine and Coat the Dry Ingredients
Pour the wet ingredients over the dry ingredients and stir everything together. Make sure all the oats, nuts, and seeds are evenly coated with the honey-coconut oil mixture. This is where the magic happens – the coconut oil helps everything crisp up, while the honey adds just the right amount of natural sweetness.
Airfry or Bake the Granola
I bake my granola in the air fryer using silicone air fryer liners. I just spoon some of the mixture in and pop it into the air fryer in batches. Usually about two to three batches depending on the size of the air fryer and the amount of granola you have. I lower the air fryer temperature to about 160 degrees centigrade and put ten minutes on the timer. Make sure you stir the granola every couple of minutes so the granola cooks evenly and kep an eye on it because it can go from uncooked to burnt very fast.
If you are using an oven instead spread the granola mixture evenly onto the prepared baking sheet. For a more even bake, press the granola gently into a compact layer. Bake for about 20-25 minutes, stirring halfway through to ensure an even golden brown color. Keep a close eye on it during the last few minutes of baking, as it can quickly go from perfectly crispy to overdone!
Let It Cool
Once your granola is beautifully golden and crispy, remove it from the oven and let it cool on a baking sheet. This is an important step! As the granola cools, it will harden and form those delicious clusters we all love.
Store and Enjoy
Once your granola is completely cooled, transfer it to an airtight container. It will stay fresh for about 1-2 weeks (if it lasts that long!). You can enjoy it as a snack on its own, sprinkle it over yogurt with fresh fruit, or even add it to your smoothie bowls for a little crunch.
